  1. (2) What is the feast of Passover and what does it commemorate? Ex 12
  2. (3) When was Caiphas high priest in Jerusalem (AD 18-36)? What do facts like this help do for the Gospel?
  3. (6-16) Contrast the value of the nard used for anointing Jesus with the price that the chief priests gave Judas?
  4. (15) Why 30 pieces of silver? Ex 21:32
  5. (17) What is the feast of Unleavened Bread? What is the significance of not leavening the bread? Ex 12:14-20
  6. (20-25) Compare the response of Judas to the rest of the disciples … what is the significance of how they address Jesus?
  7. (26-29) What miracle during Jesus’ ministry prefigured the Eucharist? See Chapter 14 study notes
  8. (26-29) How should we interpret Jesus’ commands .. “Take, eat; this is my body.” and “Drink … this is my blood”? Is it a meal? Is it a sacrifice? How do we continue to do this “in remembrance” of him? 1 Cor 10:14-16

    However, since it is a very perilous matter not to have any certainty concerning this ordinance [the Lord’s Supper], knowledge of which is so needful for our salvation, I have thought that it would be a very useful labour to try briefly and yet clearly to extract the chief substance of what it is necessary to know of the matter.

    How is certainty and knowledge of the Lord’s Supper “so needful for our salvation?”

  14. (37) Who did Jesus take with Him? Where did we see this inner circle of Apostles accompany Jesus before?
  15. (39) Does Jesus fear his Passion and Crucifixion? If so, what does/would it reveal about Him? If not, what does/would it reveal about Him?
  16. (36-46) How many times do we see Jesus pray? What does he pray for each time? What cup/chalice is Jesus referring to? See Chapter 20 study notes
  17. (36-39) How do the inner circle apostles literally demonstrate that the flesh is weak?
  18. (49-50) Compare how Judas addresses Jesus to how Jesus addresses Judas?
  19. (51-54) Who drew the sword? Why was this the wrong response?
  20. (53) In Roman army, “legion” = 6000 soldiers. Imagine 72,000 angels.

  22. (56) Compare Jesus’ betrayal to the 2 Sam 17 conspiracy against King David 2 Sam 17:1-4
    • Ahitohopel’s treachery and plan to seek David out at night when he was “weary and discouraged”
    • so that David’s companions would flee
    • He prepared to “strike down the king only”
    • When his plans fell apart, Ahitohopel hung himself. 2 Sam 17:23
  23. (57) Caiphas - Jerusalem high priest (AD 18-36) who presides over Sanhedrin, the supreme court of the Jews during Jesus’ trial.
  24. (59-60) Desperate times, desperate measures for the Sanhedrin.
  25. (61) What did Jesus really say about the Temple? John 2:19-21 How did the false witnesses twist His words?
  26. (64) Why did Jesus break his silence?
  27. (64) What does the 2nd part of Jesus response (“But I tell you…”), which draws from Ps 110:1 and Dan 7:13 indicate about His identity and how does it cast the chief priest and Sanhedrin?
